Overview

Introduction

It is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) module suitable for Jetson Orin series motherboards. It adopts a spring pin design and uses three 21700 high-capacity lithium batteries. It supports simultaneous charging and discharging and can monitor battery parameters such as voltage, current, and power through the I2C interface.

Features

  • Adopts Pogo pins connector design, compatible with Jetson Orin series boards
  • Onboard Li battery charging chip, with dynamic path management, more stable power supply
  • I2C bus communication, monitoring the batteries voltage, current, power, and remaining capacity in real time
  • Multi battery protection circuits: over charge/discharge protection, over current protection, short circuit protection, and reverse protection, along with the equalizing charge feature, more safe and stable
  • Supports 3 x 21700 batteries (NOT included), for longer standby time
  • Batteries warning indicators, easy to check if the battery is connected correctly
  • Provides with online development resources and manuals

Specifications

  • Output voltage: Same as the input voltage when there is power input; Equals the battery voltage (9V~12.6V) when there is no power input
  • Input voltage: 15V~19V
  • Control bus: I2C
  • Battery support: 3 x 5000mAh 21700 Li batteries (in series, NOT included)
  • Outline dimensions: 100mm × 79mm
  • Mounting hole diameter: 2.5mm

Precautions

The 15V~19V interface is the input power supply. To ensure the maximum power of Jetson Orin, the power supply current should be greater than 2A. It is recommended to use 45W Power Supply Adapter 19V 2.37A.
WARNING LED is a battery reverse indicator light, and the LED being on indicates that the battery is connected reversely. BOOT is the activation key for the protection circuit. OFF/ON is the power switch.
Note 1: Before installation, you need to turn the switch to OFF to turn off the power, otherwise it is easy to short circuit. After the installation is complete, make sure the Pogo pins are fully aligned with the pin headers before turning on the power. If the Pogo pins are not conductive, you can press them down and release them, or scratch off the oxidation layer on the pin headers with a knife.
Note 2: When you connect the battery for the first time, you need to pay attention to whether the WARNING LED light is on, if the LED is on, it means that the corresponding battery is reversed. Charging is prohibited when the battery is reversed.
Note 3: There may be no power output when the battery is connected for the first time, and you need to press the BOOT activation button or charge to activate the battery protection chip for power output. The power switch needs to be dialed to the ON position.
Note 4: When the battery is powered for a long time, the operating current should not be too large, otherwise the battery will heat up.
Note 5: If the positive electrode insulation pad of the battery is damaged, it is recommended not to continue using it, which may cause a short circuit and fire. When removing the battery, do not use a screwdriver to pry open the positive electrode of the battery, which may easily cause a short circuit. Instead, pry open the negative electrode of the battery.
Note 6: After the battery is fully charged, it will be in a disconnected state and will not continue charging. Charging will only resume when the battery voltage is below 12V.

Precautions for the use of lithium batteries

  • Lithium polymer and lithium-ion batteries are very unstable. They may cause fire, personal injury, or property damage, if they're not properly recharged or used.
  • When charging and discharging the battery pack, never connect the electrodes incorrectly. Do not use inferior charger/charging panel to recharge the battery.
  • Do not mix and use old batteries with new ones, and avoid using batteries from other brands.
  • If you need to purchase additional lithium-ion battery products, ensure that the battery parameters are compatible with the lithium-ion battery expansion board. It is recommended to choose batteries from legitimate manufacturers and perform your own aging tests to ensure that the lithium-ion battery can operate stably and safely.
  • Lithium batteries have a cycle life, please replace the old batteries with new ones when it reaches the end of its useful life or uses it for two years, whichever comes first.
  • Please handle battery products properly, keep them away from flammable and explosive items, and keep them out of reach of children to avoid accidents due to improper storage.

Usage Instructions

First, install the battery onto the module, paying attention to whether the battery is reversed and whether the warning light is on.
Before installing the Jetson Nano, make sure to set the switch to OFF. Otherwise, the Pogo pins might touch other circuits and damage the Jetson Nano.
The first battery installation requires charging to activate or press the BOOT key to activate the protection chip to output power.
Run the following commands to run the demo:

sudo apt-get install python3-smbus
wget https://files.waveshare.com/wiki/UPS%20Power%20Module%20(C)/UPS_Power_Module_C.zip
unzip UPS_Power_Module_C.zip
cd UPS_Power_Module_C
python3 INA219.py

After the program runs, it will output battery voltage, current, power, and battery remaining percentage, etc. The information is shown in the following figure:
UPS-Power-Module-C-2.png
Note: If the current is negative, it indicates the battery output current (which can be considered as load current), and if the current is positive, it indicates the battery charging current.
